Rothco's Essential Hiking Tips

Hiking is an exhilarating experience.  It brings you closer together with friends, family, and nature.  However, if you are not properly prepared, hiking can become strenuous and even dangerous.  This is why Rothco has crafted this guide to make sure you stay safe on your next adventure.

What to Bring?
First and foremost, the hike begins before you even step foot onto the trail.  Making sure you have the right gear for the journey is possibly the most important part.  You don't want to find yourself in a sticky situation and realize that you've forgotten something important.  What you are taking with you depends on the type of hike you are doing and what the weather will be like.  Bring a pack to fit your hike.  The longer the hike, the larger the pack.  Here's a list of items that should be brought on any hike regardless of length or weather:
What to Wear?
Proper footwear is always an essential item.  Make sure that the shoes you wear fit properly.  If your footwear is too loose and they will cause blisters and allow rocks to slip inside.  Make sure that you are wearing high top shoes.  They don't necessarily have to be hiking boots but a high top shoe helps with ankle support and helps prevent rocks from slipping in.  Socks are also incredibly important.  First, you want a sock that is thick enough to provide support, but not too thick to cause your foot to sweat excessively.  Second, your socks must be higher than your footwear.  Socks that are lower than your boot will cause chaffing and blisters.  Cargo shorts or cargo pants are also great for hiking.  The extra pockets help holding easy to reach objects that you will be using more often.  As for your upper body, layers are extremely important.  You want to be able to add or remove as needed throughout the hike.  A great example of this is Rothco's 3-in-1 Spec Ops Soft Shell Jacket.

Food and Hydration?
Dehydration is the easiest way to turn a hike sour.  Hydration packs are the easiest way to prevent this from happening.  Having easy access to water without having to stop and open up your pack decreases the likelihood of dehydration.  As for food, you want to pack items that don't need to be refrigerated.  A mix of protein, carbohydrates, and sugar will keep your energy levels up.  Here are some great ideas for getting extra energy during your hike:
  • Dried Fruit
  • Granola Bars
  • Protein Bars
  • Trail Mix
We at Rothco hope that you have gotten some useful information from our guide.  Stay safe and happy trails!

Navy Day 2017

Annually on October 27th, the United States of America pays homage to our brave seafaring officers with “Navy Day”.  The first ever Navy Day was celebrated in 1922 and takes place on former President Theodore Roosevelt’s birthday.  President Roosevelt was a very large supporter of the U.S Navy and in part pays respect to him as well.
For the first ever Navy Day, ships were sent to various ports around the country and over 50 cities participated in the event.  This year is the 95th annual celebration of Navy Day, so don’t forget to show respect and salute your sailors for all they give to our country.

Here at Rothco, it is engrained in our company's culture to give back to our community any chance we get. So on Thursday, October 19th, the employees at Rothco had the pleasure of being able to raise some money for charity. Dubbed "Touchdown Thursday", every employee who came to the office in their favorite sports team jersey, Rothco would donate $10 to charity on behalf of the employees. Over 100 employees wore sports jerseys and so Rothco was able to raise over $1,000 to the already growing Holiday Charity Fund. Happy 242nd Anniversary to the United States Navy

Today October 13th, 2017, is the 242nd anniversary of the formation of the United States Navy.  In 1775, the Continental Congress (via letter by George Washington) founded the first incarnation of the U.S Navy during the Revolutionary War.  Explore the history of the U.S Navy with these incredible facts:
  • The United States Navy is by far the largest and most powerful navy in the world.
  • Former U.S Presidents John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, and George H.W Bush are all Navy veterans.
  • The U.S Navy has alternative terms for many common household items
    • Walls = Bulkheads
    • Toilet = Head
    • Bed = Rack
    • Planes = Birds
  • U.S Navy ships are named after the eldest female descendant of a Navy veteran chosen by suggestions from the public, sailors, and naval history.
  • The USS Enterprise from Star Trek was named after the Navy's first ever nuclear-powered aircraft carrier.
  • As of 2017, there are 328,186 active duty members in the U.S Navy.
  • Other than being a movie starring Tom Cruise, TOPGUN is real and is also known as the United States Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Program.  The program is credited with saving many lives after its creation during the Vietnam War.
  • The world famous Blue Angels were created at the end of World War II in order to increase interest in naval aviation.
On this day, Rothco reflects on the Navy's rich history and wants to thank all the of the brave men and women of the past and present who have served in the United States Navy.

October #GOTM: Advanced Tactical Adjustable Airsoft Helmet

Here's an in-depth look at our October GOTM, the Advanced Tactical Adjustable Airsoft Helmet

Rothco’s Tactical Airsoft Helmet is made from a lightweight ABS plastic.  Although light, ABS plastic is highly resistant to impact making it the perfect material for airsoft or paintball equipment.

The Adjustable Helmet was created with your comfort in mind.  8 diamond shaped vent holes keep your head cool in the heat of battle.  Integrated military style chinstraps and the rear adjustment dial make sure that the helmet fits properly on your head.  Additionally, the airsoft helmet comes equipped with 5 removable/adjustable EVA foam pads for increased protection.

Possibly the best part of Rothco’s Advanced tactical Adjustable Airsoft Helmet is its ability to be customized to fit your needs.  A front NVG Mount allows you to place not only night vision goggles but accessories like action cameras as well.  These can be further stabilized by utilizing the dual bungee system.  2 multi-position side rails are ideal for lights, optics, and communication systems.  Lastly, the tactical helmet is further customizable with 3 separate loop fields to attach your favorite patches.
