Team Rothco Volunteers

Last week I had the pleasure of volunteering at the Angela's House in Smithtown, along with Gina from Human Resources and Lori from Shipping. The Smithtown house, or Angela's House II, is home to medically frail children ages 10 to about 17 years old. Rothco has been working with this organization over the past few years as part of our Holiday Charity Program.

The three of us received an educated tour of the facility, where we learned exactly what the houses do, how they are run and the needs they provide. The wonderful staff that works there explained the different disabilities and how each child is unique. They also told us how all of the equipment used in the houses was either donated to them or bought with money that they raised through their many fundraising events. Next, we were able to see the beautiful rooms that the children have, complete with large murals on the walls and decorations galore. The house felt cozy and warm. It really is a home away from home.

After the tour, it was time to meet some of the residents. We were joined by two of the children who live there and had the opportunity to read to them in their living room. Then it was time to get our hands dirty and make the house's garden ready for the summer. We planted brightly colored flowers in the front gardens to help make the house more colorful and inviting. It was such a rewarding experience to see all this organization has to offer these children. I am so thankful to work for a company that encourages its employees to volunteer at organizations like Angela's House.

Angela's House is a non-profit organization that assists families caring for children with special health care needs that are medically fragile, chronically ill, or living with a life-threatening illness. The three houses, located on Long Island, NY, provide round the clock care for children who cannot live at home due to their circumstances or cannot afford proper medical care.
