Rothco's Charity Spotlight: Angela's House

For over a decade, Rothco and its employees have come together during the holiday season to raise money for local charities from Long Island, NY (Rothco's Hometown Area). Here at Rothco we realize how fortunate we are and are always looking for ways to give back to the community. Not only do we want to help financially, we also want people to be aware of these great causes. That is why we have asked several of the charities to highlight who they are and what they do.

This month we wanted to highlight Angela's House

Angela’s House assists families caring for children with special health care needs that are medically fragile, chronically ill or living with a life-threatening illness. We have worked with both the local and federal government to create programs that can provide supports for parents that want to care for their medically frail children at home. Though our Care at Home Program, Angela’s House outreaches to and assists over 600 children and families on Long Island.

This program was created thanks to a great deal of creativity and persistence. Thanks to a special exception within the Medicaid program, Angela's house is able to help both low and middle-income families on Long Island get support for their medically fragile child and enable them to live at home, instead of in a hospital. The federal government realized our Care at Home program provides a win-win situation, in that it gets children out of hospital (which reduces re-occurrence of illness and allows for a more typical life) and saves a great deal of money at the same time. Our wonderful family support service providers and staff of nurses and case managers work tirelessly to ensure that each of our Angela’s House children has access to the best quality of life for them and their families.

For children that cannot live at home, Angela’s House runs three state-of-the-art residences, which care for a total of 23 children.  These homes provide 24-hour specialized nursing care and a warm, loving environment for our medically frail children.  These specialty homes are the only ones in the existence area. These homes are a wonderful alternative for medically fragile children and their families, as their only other options would be to live out-of-state or in a hospital full-time. Our newest home, which opened in 2013 in Stony Brook, fills a huge gap in New York State’s health care service delivery system. This home offers 24-hour, long-term nursing and medical care option for children that are ventilator-dependent. The eight children at Angela’s House III would otherwise call a hospital or an out-of-state nursing facility home, as they cannot be cared for at home.

The ailments, conditions, disabilities of children of Angela’s House can’t be described using one term.  The children often have multiple illnesses or challenges, and often have other related complications. This summer we logged many of the different diagnoses of the children we assist and we narrowed it down to 200.  These disabilities, accidents or common/rare diseases have so many variations within them and unique characteristics and difficulties.
