It Ain't Easy Being Green

A short history into one of America's most classic toys.

You have probably played with one, once or twice in your life, perhaps even blew one up with a firecracker but have you ever thought about the history behind one of America's most classic toys?

Almost 75 years ago the first American plastic army men started to be manufactured. Originally manufactured by a company call Beton, they were painted like their metal figure originators. It wasn't until after WWII, these men took on the classic green style they are known for today.

By the 1950's the popularity of these toys started to really take off, soon companies started to create play-sets and additional figurines like farmers, cowboys, and policemen. At the height of their popularity in the 1960's, the Army men were being sold for about a penny a piece. It was also during this time these green men took on different colors to represent opposing armies. French was designated Blue, British/Khaki, German/Grey and Japanese/Yellow.

By the 1970's the toys interest did start to fade due to the rising cost of plastic and the backlash of the Vietnam War. But 40 years later these classic toys can still be found in every kid's toy collection. They might stick out against their iPads, Wii's and Lego Sets but never the less a part of most children's childhood.

Toronto Raptors Unveil the First Camo NBA Jersey

With camo jerseys being more relevant than ever, the TorontoRaptors announced the NBA’s first ever camouflage jersey. The move to createthe camo jerseys is rooted in the Raptors’ ownership group’s support of theCanadian Military. The jerseys will make their first official appearance on March 21 as part ofthe Canadian Forces Night. The print is mocked up in Canadian DisruptivePattern (CADPAT), a traditional Canadian computer-generated digi-camo that hasbeen used to reduce the likelihood of detection by night vision devices. UMD Honors US Military with Jersey

On November 14, 2009, the Universityof South Carolina and University of Maryland football teams recognized thesacrifices made by those who have served and those that continue to serve inour nation’s Armed Forces. The teams took the field in black and desertcamouflage uniforms featuring the Wounded Warrior Project logo, a non-profitorganization that provides programs and services for injured service membersand their families. The camo clad uniforms also had a unique twist. Duty, Honor,Courage, Commitment, Integrity, Country, Service, and Freedom replaced theplayers’ last name on the back of each jersey. Terps defensive lineman TravisIvey said the military connection adds a dimension to the game. “Knowingwe’re playing not just for ourselves, but for wounded veterans, I think it willencourage us to persevere because that’s their life."

Getting the sports world involved opens a whole newwindow to military appreciation. Praying to God that your team wins theirnext game might seem like the most important thing going on in your life whenit really isn’t. There are over a million soldiers fighting to defendyour freedom, just so you can feel safe inside your house while you’re watchingthe New York Football Giants destroy the Green Bay Cheeseheads. So thenext time you see a team take the field in a camouflage jersey, don’t justcriticize whether you think it looks cool or not, take time to appreciate thepeople who have risked their lives and worked the hardest out of anyone in thecountry to defend your way of life.

Military inspired fashion is everywhere in 2012!!!

From shirts and shoes to belts and bags, you cannot turn a page of a major fashion magazine or a street corner without seeing some military styled clothing. I for one am a huge fan of this trend and not just because I have easy access to a warehouse full of these looks. But because these looks are classic and timeless and go with about everything!

Glamour Magazine just named the Military Look the "First Great Trend of 2012". The photo spread in their New Year's addition featured the likes of Kate Middleton and Drew Barrymore, oh yeah and Rothco (now that's some very stylish company)!

Tons of great vintage military inspired looks are hitting the pages of this year's fashions magazines from our Commando Sweater in Glamour to Marie Claire's recent editorial called "Tropical Storm", which featured a mix of floral and military clothing trends. Proving that you can mix and match this trend with just about anything even a floral jump suite! Who knew?

What makes these looks so great is that they are accessible at any local Army/Navy Store and super affordable. Just take the photo to your right from Marie Claire; they featured our Ranger Vest that sells for about $30 dollars next to a Stella McCartney shirt that cost over a grand! Guess you don't to be a major designer label for it to be fashionable.

Adding a military web belt or a pair of combat boots to any outfit is a great way to add a touch of this trend into your normal everyday outfit. Just checkout the rest of the photos, Marie Claire did, until today I would never think about pairing a floral with a military but it doesn't look half bad!

As another year comes to a close and the holiday season kicks into full gear, Rothco likes to remember that this is the season for giving back. Throughout the year Rothco makes contributions to several charities but it is during the holiday season when everyone here at Rothco contributes. Each year, during this season, Rothco chooses several charities to sponsor, they must be directly related to helping children and in most cases (except for Operation Smile) they must be local and grass roots. Everyone at Rothco takes great pleasure in donating to these causes because most of them are locally based and we get the opportunity to see the wonderful work they do for our communities.

This year we are excited to report that through employee donations, Rothco's corporate matching program and the money we save by sending e-cards instead of printed cards in memory of Marc Somberg, Rothco was able to donate over $40,000!!! That money will be put to great use and will be donated to 7 different charitable causes. For 2011 the charities Rothco will be donating to include:

The Hope House Ministries - Provides housing and counseling for at risk youth
Operation Smile - An organization that provides surgery to correct cleft palates in children around the world
Pronto - Provides services, food and housing to the Hispanic Community
Witness Housing - An organization that sponsors families in need to pay for housing and other costs of living
Our Daily Bread - A soup kitchen
Christmas Magic - A organization that provides gifts of food, toys and clothing for the less fortunate

In addition to monetary contributions, Rothco also participates in an annual holiday toy drive. This year we have already filled the box over 3 times! And from the several peeks I have taken, there looks to be some pretty cool gifts inside and will make for some very happy kids. But giving doesn't start there; during Thanksgiving Rothco employees will also donate their holiday Turkeys to local food kitchens and churches instead of taking them for themselves.

Army-Navy: More Than Just a Game

"THEY HAD OUR GOAT WE'LL HAVE THEIR ASS"

Dating back to 1890, the Army Black Knights and the NavyMidshipmen have met every December (with a few exceptions) to clash horns anddecides who claims bragging rights for toughest football team. Thehistory and tradition of the game makes no other rivalry in sports come closeto comparing. The array of patriotismand school spirit displayed by these two schools is an amazing inspiration.

The rivalry between the two academies, while friendly, isintense. One week before the footballgame in 1953, the first reported kidnapping of “Bill the Goat” was announced. A group of West Point Cadets snuck ontoAnnapolis campus with the help of a West Point foreign exchange student wholived at the Naval Academy. Afterfinding Bill behind the stadium, the cadets put the goat in the back of theirconvertible. However, when taking Billback to campus their cover was blown when Bill’s horns ripped through the roofof the car. When they returned back toWest Point with the goat they presented him to Army’s boisterous dinnertime peprally. Once the Navy midshipmen foundout about the news they refused to go to class until the goat was returned. The goat's return was ordered by officialsfrom West Point as well as President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

"While we will be the fiercest of rivals on Saturday, it's a great rivalry because ultimately it's founded on respect. We respect one another at the institutional level and the individual level," said U.S. Military Academy Head Coach Rich Ellerson.

To this date, because of the tradition of the game itremains nationally televised. Most ofthese players will not be moving onto a professional sports team. The two teams play for the loveof the game and the honor of their schools and country. Every college football player has a goal toreach the NFL, but the players on these twoteams have far different goals then all the other players in the nation. After graduating they will proceed with thecommitments they made to serve their country, and it is this fact that makes this game so great.

The game is especially emotional to the seniors on the teambecause it will typically be their last competitive football game of theircareers. During wartime the game is evenmore emotional, as some seniors will not return once they are deployed.

Weeks before kickoff, men and women of the Army and Navydisplay their school spirit with Go Army and Go Navy rants. Posters and banners will be hung at therespective campuses this time of the year. Now-a-days they even post comical videos online to cheer on theirschools which are called “spirit spots.” To the right is an Army spirit spot video where some soldiers kidnap Bill the Goat and serve him for dinner.

Whether you like watching football or not, you should tunein to watch the pageantry and tradition of the game. It’s patriotism at its purest! Can't wait to watch the game this Saturday!

Military and Tactical Teams Going Green to Lose Weight!

Energy. Whether you are a soldier on a critical mission, a traveler in Europe or hiker in the woods, we all need energy to keep our modern devices going. Military personnel in particular have tremendous needs for energy, whether it is fuel for their vehicles and generators or batteries for all the high-tech communication devices they use, energy takes up a tremendous amount of space and weight in the pack of each individual soldier or the fuel convoys that are used to carry the energy needs of a troop.

With that in mind, the U.S. Air Force has begun to use biofuels in their planes according to a Bloomberg report,
and the U.S. Marines are testing solar power to replace the batteries and generators they lug all over Iraq and Afghanistan, most with positive results according to NPR.

Rothco has been carrying hand-crank and solar-powered flashlights, lanterns and chargers for almost 4 years now and sales just keep on growing. I've personally become quite fond of my Rothco Multi-Functional Solar Panel for charging my iPhone and iPod. It's large 6 1/2" x 5" screen quickly charges a power cell that can be used to give a good, quick charge to any cell phone or iPod. I attached this to my backpack when we traveled in Spain and it kept my iPhone will charged while we used it as a GPS device and travel guide. I even keep the solar panel charging on my dashboard in my car so that I can just grab the fully-charged lithium ion power cell whenever my phone battery is low. Just last Friday night I was at a small club show watching one of my favorite artists from back in the day, Wreckless Eric. I really wanted to record him playing is big hit "Whole Wide World" but my iPhone was low on juice. The trusty power cell from my solar charger gave me more than enough power to record the song and even get an ID for the radio station I DJ for.

Rothco's Newest Solar Lantern Coming Early 2012

Over the last several months, between Hurricane Irene and the recent early October snowfall here in the northeast, we've had a ton of power outages. Sales of our new LED Solar/Handcrank Lantern were very brisk especially as the outages lasted more than a week in some areas. Folks were able to keep informed of the latest news and weather developments with our Solar/Wind Up Radio. We carry smaller cellphone chargers and flashlights, too.

Pictured here is our latest lantern, a jumbo LED lantern powered by solar or handcrank. We're also working on a solar flashlight/radio combo and a solar "blanket" that can be used to power a small laptop for next year. All these items will allow our customers access to light, radio, cell phones, etc. anywhere there is sun. While there may not be as much sun here in the Northeast as in Iraq or Afghanistan, there's plenty here to keep our gadgets going.

A day does not go by when I do not see people incorporating the classic look of military apparel into their everyday style. From a classic M-65 Field Jacket to a Fatigue Cap. Military is becoming more and more important in the world of fashion and vintage apparel and accessories has become more important than ever.

While walking the trade show's in New York City recently, I came across several companies who were showing their versions of military fatigues as high as $80 to $120 wholesale! The best part about my encounter with these companies is that, while they were showing their companies fatigues on the floor of the show, they were actually wearing Rothco's fatigues themselves, a true testament to the value and authenticity of a pair of Rothco vintage fatigue pants.

Casey from Shelmar said "I've been working with many smaller trendy companies and I keep on seeing their version of military apparel and Rothco often comes up as their inspiration" Casey then contacted Rothco to buy the original.

They say intimation is the sincerest form flattery, then boy are we flattered! In a recent trip to a major department store in NYC (I will hide their identity for the sake of this blog but let's just say... It was a true miracle on 34th Street!) I came across their private label collection, which was a mixture of denim and vintage military apparel and accessories. And it was real easy to see Rothco's Vintage Clothing was a huge inspiration to their line of apparel.

While fashion companies are always changing with the seasons and whats trendy at the moment. From our Vintage Paratrooper Fatigue Pants and Shorts to our Vintage Shirts and Outwear. It's A Zombie Eat Zombie World Out There

Rothco's Blog of the Living Dead...

In honor of this most horrifying holiday, a day when the dead can walk freely, I figure it would be an appropriate time to cover how to survive a zombie apocalypse.

So what does one do, when the dead rise from the ground? Flight or Fight? I say fight, from all the movies like Night of the Living Dead or TV shows like The Walking Dead, it doesn't look like there are many places to hide because they are everywhere.
But whatever your choice is, it's important you be prepared! Lucky for me, I am walking distance from a 155,000 square foot warehouse full of all the supplies I would need to fend off a zombie attack. For everyone else a well equipped Army/Navy store should do the trick.

The first and most important items on my Zombie prep list would be....WEAPONS. A key to anyone's survival is to be able to protect yourself. First of of course would be a gun and as much ammo I could carry, the next item up for grabs would be a nice Machete, this item is perfect for swinging away at a crowd full of zombie attackers. Speaking of knives, in any survival situation one should never be without a good Survival Knife, the one I am going with not only includes a two knives but also a fishing line and hook, compass, signal mirror and bandages.

I am not sure how useful the bandages will be though...those zombie bites seem to be pretty lethal. I don't think there's enough Neosporin in the world to help me out with that infection.
Next on the list is some riot gear, Rothco's Anti-Riot Helmet and Anti-Riot Shield are a must. And if the Zombie apocalypse doesn't come, These items are also helpful if I ever decided to occupy Wall St.

What are you going to do
when they come for you?

My other thought was, when I am not fighting or running from zombies it would be important to have a good lookout. Zombies may be slow but you never know when one will be sneaking up on you. That's why I will make sure I have a awesome pair of night vision goggles. And while I am stocking up on electronics a good solar light and charger would be key. From whats depicted in the movies our electrical systems won't last very long and gasoline will be sparse. Solar charges like likes these will come in very handy.

And of course there's the kick-ass outfit, every great zombie fighter needs a good durable outfit. A must in anyone's arsenal would be a good pair of Combat Boots, a leather jacket with a collar to protect against bites and a pair of Rothco's EMT pants, I went with these because they are coated to repel blood and fluids and since it seems the zombie virus is spread through blood contact, I think these pants are a MUST. And let's not forget gloves, Rothco' Tactical Gloves are perfect not only are they cut resistant but also feature a hard knuckle, perfect for protecting your hands.

Other important items include some MRE's, Cash, clean socks, and my iPhone. Who knows maybe someone will invent an app for killing zombies.

And now I think I am ready to fight! For more information on how to protect yourself in a Zombie attack the nice folks over at the Center for Diseases Control (CDC) also came up with a nice "How to Survive Site" and you wonder what your tax dollars today are going towards!

The History of Camo Part II... The Attack of The U.S Camo

Who said sequels where never as good as the original???

When we last left off Camouflage has just made its way to all the major countries entrenched in warfare. By the early 1900's countries from France to the U.S had set up departments solely for the study and development of camo. These new camouflage departments consisted of artists, designers and architectures all working to design better camouflage patterns. And by 1917 the word camouflage was added to the English language. It's hard to believe that the word "camouflage" has only been around for less than 100 years.

"There must be something intriguing about the word camouflage" an officer told Time Magazine in 1942

How the Leopard Got His Spots

And how true he was... With camouflage patterns becoming mass produced you began to see the variations of patterns become more prevalent during World War II. At first the patterning was uncommon, and a sign of an elite unit. But by 1942 General Douglas MacArthur actually demanded 150,000 jungle camouflage uniforms for his units. And by 1944 U.S troops were spotted on the shores of Normandy it what was known as "frog skin"/"leopard spot" patterns. But this pattern didn't last long, due to similarities to German Waffen SS troops, which lead to confusion and friendly fire. Remnants of the leopard pattern where later adapted by the USMC special units (which later evolve into the Navy SEALS). These spotted uniforms where even used by Cuban exiles in the Bay of Pigs Invasion.

As the U.S entered in to the Vietnam War, U.S troops began to adopt the pattern know as "Tigerstripe" this pattern was also known as the "John Wayne pattern" because it was featured in one of his movies during the time. The crazy thing about this pattern is that while troops were wearing it, the Tigerstrip patter was never an officially government issued pattern. And now 40 years later we are seeing a resurgence in this classic pattern - most recently featured by Converse in their new Chuck Taylor's or Rothco's Vintage Tigerstripe Fatigue Pants.

M81 Woodland

By the '80's the U.S had reached the next stage in the camo evolution or as I would like to call it "camolution" by developing what is known as M81 Woodland pattern, born out of an Enlarged version of the ERDL Leaf camouflage pattern. The enlargement of the design represented a shift in military tactics from the closed range combat of Vietnam to more distant fighting. Of all the patterns I would have to say this one is my fav! A true classic, whose design elements can be seen from the theater of war to the fashion runways of Milan and Paris.

It's very clear to see how the location of the war effects the development of the Uniform. During the Gulf war, America move toward desert camouflage patterns. First was, what was known as the "chocolate chip" pattern. And I can say that after starring at this pattern for a while it does give me a strange craving for some cookie dough ice cream! Then staying on the food track was the next design now as the DCU [Desert Camouflage Uniform] or otherwise known as the "coffee stain" pattern. Not sure what's up with all the food references but I am pretty sure the last thing I want to be thinking about while engaged in battle is how hungry my uniform makes me.

Rothco proudly supports many charities one of them being the Babylon Breast Cancer Collation with proceeds of our Black Pink Strips & Breast Cancer Ribbon going to this charity. This Vintage Rothco Fatigue Cap has helped us raise thousands of dollars, all of which was donated to the BBCC. And even though October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, Rothco runs this charity all year long.

The best thing about all our pink gear, besides helping a worthy cause, is seeing it inspire people who fight this disease. Recently I came across an article in the Las Vegas Review-Journal entitled "Warrior Attitude Inspired Summerlin Area Women During Breast Cancer Treatment" and saw this women decked out head to toe in Rothco's Pink Camo Gear.

The story went on to talk about how her pink camo outfit gave Cathy hope. In the article, Cathy the women pictured above, dressed all in pink camo, husband a former Marine was the one who purchased the Pink Camouflage for her. In the article he said "I got her the whole outfit, and it gave her hope".

Sometimes a color is more that a color and sometime I simple piece of clothing can inspire you. It's great to see that happen here! Cathy will being wearing her inspirational pink camo outfit during a local 5k fun walk - I wish her the best of luck during her walk and fight against cancer.

Even though October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, that doesn't mean you can't support this great cause everyday because Pink is in season all year round! And people like Cathy fight Cancer everyday, so show your support by wearing pink or donating to a worthy cause and join in the Army to fight cancer.

The most amazing thing about our bags is that I've seen them everywhere, from the streets of New York City to small screen. Most recently you can spot Rothco's Vintage Mini "Star" Backpack on ABC Family's, the Lying Game as seen in the picture on the left.

I have also seen people take our vintage bags like the Musette Bag and use our canvas bags like they would a canvas piece of art. Checkout (picture on the right) how someone took inspiration from the hit books the Hunger Games and created a bag all their own. Rothco has also started added some embellishment to our own bags, like our Vintage Pathfinder Laptop Bag, which not only has a leather bottom but leather accents as well.

Rothco's line of vintage bags is constantly expanding, just today in our product meeting we talked about adding new colors to some of our classic bags, I am pretty sure that in a few month's I will be writing another blog on our ever expanding collection!

Best in Trade Show

Our Booth @MAGIC Tradeshow in Vegas!

The summer months for most mean hitting the beach and relaxing in the sun but for our team at Rothco, summer means hitting some TRADESHOWS, from Vegas to New York, to Vegas again, we covered a lot of ground!

These past shows were particularly exciting because Rothco had the chance to unveil over a 160 new items, the most new product ever! Some of the new products we brought to the shows included Rothco's new vintage military t-shirts, Paracord bracelets, and new camouflage patterns; including our New Subdued Urban Digital Camo Pants and jacket.

The first show to hit off the summer trade show season was the ASD show in Las Vegas; the show ran from July 31st till August 4th. ASD brings together the world's widest variety of merchandise from Health & Beauty to Toys and of course Rothco! Representing Rothco at the show was Eddie Feliciano and Hans Blechschmidt, after their return, I asked them a couple of questions about the show and their experience. They said "Everyone there really loved our new vintage military t-shirts and Paracord bracelets". Which is no surprise to me; these items have been tremendously well received not only at our trade shows but also online on our fan page and emails. One of the most interesting things to note, is the "usual crowd" who used to make orders at the show opted to wait until they got home, because Rothco's online system "makes ordering so easy". Another cool part of the show is when the booth next to Rothco's brought in a MMA fighter and Han's got meet him, as an added bonus his presence brought more traffic to the Rothco booth as well! Overall the show was a great opportunity to meet new clients and introduce Rothco's new items for this fall.

Up next on the schedule was the NYC Gift show at the Javits Center, this is an unique show for Rothco. Gone are the usual Army/Navy owners, this show offers a more diverse mix of exhibitors including Jewels and Gadgets. The NYC Gift show was a great opportunity for Rothco to feature more of its accessories and standout from everyone else with our Vintage Bag Collection and the ever popular Paracord Bracelets where a huge hit (no matter where we go, our Paracord is the must see item).

The last stop on Rothco's summer tour,was to the MAGIC show in Las Vegas, NV. Taking place from August 22 through the 24th, this event is one of our more exciting events, the show is full of major fashion movers and shakers it is a go to spot even for celebrities and musicians to promote their clothing lines. Rothco was lucky enough to get a great booth location on the main isle in the street wear section; we had customers from around the world come and visit our Booth. Visitors really liked our vintage military apparel and accessories. According to Darin Kaye our sales rep at the show, military apparel has become main stream and more and more people are adding military items into their mix. Some hot Rothco items at the show included our Vintage M65 Field Jacket, Commando Sweaters, Canvas backpacks, Web Belts, and of course our Paracord Bracelets.

The History of Camouflage Part I

Part I...The Birth of Camouflage

It's this blogs namesake, a fashion statement but most important, Camouflage is one of the most essential components of modern military combat. So what's the story behind this stealthy combat art form?

Well, to my surprise the history of camouflage in combat goes way back to the 17th century and I am sure it probably goes back even further to the early stages of man who would use his surroundings to hide and hunt for prey. But for historical purposes, the gamekeepers from the Untied Kingdom seem to be one of the first to adopted drab colors to blend(camouflage) into their environment during a time of war.

Later examples of camouflage in combat would be seen in the Napoleonic wars, in which Rifleman from the 95th, adopted green jackets in contrast to the Line's regiment of scarlet tunics. Just looking at the picture to the left, I can say we have come a long way in combat uniforms. I wonder if that thing on top of the helmet was a way to look like a tree branch?

Would you believe that modern day khaki colored uniforms date back to British troops in 1857 in India? British soldiers starting dying their white drill uniforms with mud, colored inks and even morning breakfast beverages like coffee and tea, in order to blend into the brown terrain of India. These dye methods resulted in colors that ranged from grey to a light brown and by 1885 these brown and tan colors otherwise known as khaki became standard uniform for the British Indian Army troops stationed in India and even Africa. This "khaki" trend was then soon adopted by the United States during the civil war when rifle units opted out of their green jackets and also countries like Germany, Portugal and Italy started to use colored uniforms to match their surroundings.

But it's not till the First World War that we see influences of modern day camo as we know it and we have Abbott Thayer to thank for this. Abbot was a artist and zoologist and he published a book in 1909, titled Concealing Coloration in the Animal Kingdom: A Exposition of the Laws of Disguise Through Color and Pattern. His book became essential reading for all military leaders, who wanted to find new ways to conceal or "camouflage' not only their troops but military equipment as well. If you are up for a good long read the book is actually available for your review here, it's about 500 pages so enjoy! From this book and various other artistic movements like Cubism and Impressionism modern day camouflage was born.

In Camobloge's next post on the history of Camouflage, I will delve into Camouflage during the Twentieth Century and how it evolved through the different wars. Who knew there was so much history behind the subject of Camouflage.

Bugging Out Over My Bug Out Bag

The unpredictable nature of today's world has got me "bugging out" literally. Fires, floods, earthquakes, the stock markets ups and downs, riots in the streets of London; it all has me thinking...

I should be prepared and get myself a Bug Out Bag. Some know it as a 72-hour kit, a grab bag or my favorite name for it a GOOD (Get out of Dodge) Bag. Whatever you call it, the objective is the same, a B.O.B allows you to evacuate quickly if a disaster should strike. According to Wikipedia, the bags origins are military based and relate to the emergency kits military aviators used to carry before bailing out of a plane.

The Red Cross states the kit you put together should meet your family's needs for at least 72 hours and should be stored in an easy-to-carry bag on wheels or backpack. My votes for a backpack, they are light and easy to carry, like our Black Medium Transport Pack. So now that I've got the bag, the million dollar question is... what to put in the Bug Out Bag?

Luckily for me, I work for a company that has everything I need to pack a proper bag; the only problem I can run into is over packing. The thought of abandoning your home is scary but an even scarier thought, is not having the right items because you wanted to pack an extra pair of shoes.

Some of the key items you pack vary based on your location but for me, I started my bag with a sleeping bag and pad because wherever you end up, its important you get a good night's sleep. Next up in the bag is a Multi-tool, when I polled our over 7000 Facebook Fans, this item was their number one choice and I can see why, it has so many functions you would be crazy not to have one even when your not in an emergency situation.

Some other key items include a First Aid Kit, Bug Repellent, Water treatment, Tarp or some kind of protective covering, extra socks and clothing, Canteen, Fishing line, Fire starter and if I have the urge to pull a MacGyver some DUCT tape and Paracord.

And just in case my iPhone Apps are not working a Compass, Flash light and light sticks, Safety Whistle, Map, Survival Guide, Crank/Solar Emergency Radio and a solar charger for my phone to ensure my phone will work (fingers crossed for service).

And while I hope I never have to used it, some websites say I will need a gun or knife and about $200 worth of cash for bargaining, hey I guess you never know and like the boy scouts say "always be prepared" and that is is exactly what a Bug Out Bag is. You hope you will never have to use it but at least you know you are ready.

And now I am ready!

Rothco's 2012 catalog is exactly 300 pages this year and is chock-full of new military, tactical and outdoor apparel and gear....and it's about to hit the presses. Look for it to be sent out in early September... and just when you thought your summer reading was over!

Right now as I write this, our art department is in its first round of routing, as process in which they review the order of the items and pages. After about 2-3 rounds of this, the catalog is then set off to pagination for another review and then it is off to the printer. The process of laying out the new catalog with all the new product was started back in April and to think in a few short months, Rothco was able to put together a whole new catalog with thousands of products is amazing!

I am extremely excited to be here at Rothco, I can't believe that I have already been here for over three months now, time really does fly. I am excited to learn about everything Rothco has to offer. The best part about my job is that everything I learn about Rothco, I get to share with you, the fan.

This spring I got the chance to visit the great state of Kansas and the many Rothco Retailers in there. With over 20 years in this business, I never get tired of visiting and learning the history of these stores. Behind each door is a great story.

My first stop on the trip was to Patriot Outfitters, which is a chain of 25 stores including their website. I visited there stores outside Ft. Riley. It has been amazing to see their phenomenal growth in the past couple years. The store has grown so much since their days as a small kiosk inside the PX of Fort Riley.

When I asked them what stands out about Rothco they said "Our service: It is second to none." And some of their favorite Rothco products to carry include our ACU stools, Berets, Microfiber towels and the ever popular Shemaghs. In short anything that makes a soldiers life easier and more convenient.

The best part of this trip was when Joe the head buy for Patriot Outfitters was able to get me into FT. Riley PX as his guest because which was great because they normally don't let civilians in there. I was amazed at the rules and regulations they must function under even as a mall store.

Another stop on my trip was to one our oldest and most established accounts in the area, Mickey's Army Navy, located in Kansas City, Ks.

Established in 1953, Mickey's A&N currently has three generations working in the store! You would be amazed at the stuff they have on display at their store; from old jeeps to a couple of de-milled 500 lb. bombs on their sales floor! I can say that their displays are truly out of this world because they even have an Astronaut's space suit! I was some amazed by this, I even forgot to take a picture! Well, maybe next time.

Mickey's A&N is a very diverse store selling everything from ammo to Paracord. Their favorite Rothco items to carry include our very popular Paracord, kid's clothes and Rothco's Vintage Shorts. And they love how fast, friendly and efficient our customer service is.

Mickey's A&N was truly a fun place to visit. A special thanks to Micky, Julie and Abby (the 3 generations of owners) who really made me feel at home.

I made several other visits on my trip to Kansas and have more stories than I can put into words. I would like to thank all the stores I visited for opening your doors and welcoming me in. Can't wait for the next visit.

Rothco Rewards a Promising Young Student

As another school year draws to a close, Rothco reaches out to our local Long Island community and awards a scholarship to a deserving young high school student who has overcome significant obstacles in their life, who might of not have the opportunity to attend college.

Rothco's Jeff Galloway Memorial Scholarship was established in honor of Jeff, a long-time employee and manager at Rothco. Jeff faced many challenges in his life. His untimely death prompted Rothco to create this scholarship as a way of honoring his life and memory.

This year's recipient of the Jeff Galloway Memorial Scholarship is Jackie Janicky of Longwood High School in Long Island, New York. I had the honor in speaking with Jackie and her BOCES Social Worker, Ms. Roland, about what this scholarship means to her and how grateful she is to have won it.

Ms. Roland has been working with Jackie for over 2 years and when they first meet, Jackie had no plans to continue with school. Now with the encouragement of Ms. Roland and the aid of the Rothco scholarship not only is Jackie attending college in the fall at SUNY Delhi in upstate New York but she will be following in her mentors footsteps by studying to become a social worker herself.

"The Rothco scholarship is wonderful, not only does Jackie receive $6000, it also pays for the cost of books, which is something you don't see most scholarships do." said Ms. Roland.

It was under Ms. Roland suggestion that Jackie entered the Scholarship in which she wrote an essay illustrating how she learned to deal with living with family members suffering with substance abuse.

"I am so grateful for this opportunity, It means so much to me, that I can now go away to college" said Jackie on her thoughts about winning the Rothco scholarship. Besides thanking Rothco, Jackie also wanted to thank Ms. Roland, because without her she would not be where she is today...which is on her way to college.

On the Road Again

As a salesman our job often takes us on the road, giving us the chance to meet with our great Rothco Retailers. This past month I got the opportunity to visit some of our stores in New Jersey and Philadelphia.

My first stop of the trip took me to Harry's Army Nay in Robbinsville, NJ. Harry's Army Navy has been a family run business for over 60 years and is one of Rothco largest accounts in Jersey. On my visit I saw the owner Rick Mehr who took the business over from his Father and Founder, Harry Mehr. In my conversations with him, we talked about the history of the business and what Rothco products they like to sell. He said his vest selling Rothco Gear was our BDU's and Ghillie Suits. With their great merchandising, I have a feeling that they will be selling Rothco products for the next 60 years. Rothco largest accounts in Jersey. The next stop on the tour brought me to Philly to visit Lipman's Army Navy, which caters to the urban fashion customer, as well as public safety and security firms. As I walked up to the front of the store I was greeted by the store Manager Eddie, who was rockin some Rothco himself! There is nothing better than seeing our dealers wearing our products, except maybe buying some for their store, which he did.

5 Miles down the road from Lipman's, I visited another client of ours MJ Apparel. I could not get over the great display of Rothco bags, boots and belts they had. The owner Yonni loves selling our Rothco boots and how they allow her to be different than the department stores. She said by far the best seller has been our Rothco Cold Weather Hiking Boot and can't wait for us to come out with an all black version. The third stop on my 3 day visit was to my buddy and proprietor Joe Musemeci of Grandpop's Army Navy Store. Joe converted his store from a dental office and has made it one of Rothco's fastest growing brick & mortar retailers. As for his favorite sellers, he enjoys selling our BDU's, tactical boots and booty camp outfits. I especially enjoyed the great display of paracord bracelets he had in his store!

Finally, I had the great pleasure of stopping by to see Brian, the owner of "The Grind Apparel", who has done a great job of promoting Rothco products not only on his website but on Facebook as well. In terms of work-wear stores, I've never seen one as nice as this, with dark cherry wood floors and a Rothco banner displayed prominently in the front of his store. He has also done a great job displaying our Rothco boots in the store and online.

I enjoyed and learned many things on this trip. Every store owner I meet with is living proof of the American Dream that our Military Personnel and Veterans have fought for. This is what I will be thinking about this Memorial Day Weekend. Thank you to all the stores I got to visit and I can't wait to visit some more in the future.

Lucky Number 9000

About 5 months ago, we realized Rothco was about to reach a huge milestone after nearly 60 years in business ...We were about to get our reach 9000th active dealers for the first time in our history!

We have always felt that our success is fully dependent upon the success of our distributor partners. And that is why we thought an accomplishment like this should be shared with that lucky 9000th dealer. And that is when Rothco started our 9000th dealer promotion, one fortunate person would join our 8900 plus army navy surplus, uniform, apparel, promotional and government suppliers as a Rothco dealer.

When our IT Department informed me on March, 31st that we had hit our goal, I was ecstatic and couldn't wait to see who it was. It was an honor for me to contact the winner of our $500 account credit and to inform Mike of Veteran Surplus in Killeen, Texas that they indeed were the 9000th dealer!

This contest gave me a great opportunity to speak with Mike, a retired Military veteran and ask him about his new budding business.

Mike started his business after his brother-in-law, a retired naval veteran had suggested it to him. His brother-in-law John had work for a similar Army surplus store some time ago and thought there was a need for an Army/Navy store to be run by actual veterans. And as their motto says on their Facebook page Veterans Surplus is "Veterans severing Veterans"

Location, Location, Location! After speaking with Mike I learned that his new business is located right outside of America's largest military bases, Fort Hood. He said that his community has played a large part in their clientele. And while a majority of the base is severing over in Afghanistan, Mike took to expanding his client base focusing in on tactical gear for the local EMS, Fire Department and Police.

When I asked Mike how he found out about Rothco, he said that is brother had worked with Rothco at his past job and knew of our huge selection and reliability, so it was a no brainier! Mike said that he really does love our products and enjoys not only purchasing items via the catalog but also our convenient online purchasing site.

A Rothco Tradition

I wanted to take a moment to share with you some of Rothco's Traditions. As you may know Rothco has been in business for nearly 60 years and is full of history and traditions. One of these traditions is for every Rothco employee to come together in a toast celebrating Passover and Easter.

Every spring we enter into a very joyful holiday season with Passover and Easter falling around the same time we are lucky enough to be able to celebrate these holidays together not only as co-workers but as a family.

Milton Somberg founder of Rothco, started this holiday tradition over 50 years ago, back when there were only 3 staff members in a small building in Manhattan raising their glasses to the holiday. And now this toast has grow to over 150 employees coming together. The location has changed over the years but the meaning behind this tradition has stayed the same. A tradition that is rooted in a simple belief that we can come together and celebrate as one.

So this past Thursday every Rothco employee gathered in our warehouse to honor this tradition. We raised our glasses to another year of hope and prosperity. It was a perfect way to celebrate a time honored tradition.

Rothco Raises Money for Relief in Japan

As news of the devastation in Japan started filtering in last months, our thoughts and prayers went out to the people of Japan. This is especially true given our decades-long relationships with our customers in Japan. In fact, I had just returned from there a few weeks ago and spent time with my good friend Morito of Ixis Corp located in Fukushima. Each year he brings me a special gift of Mamador bean cakes and I bring them home to my children. They know Morito as the "Mamador Man" and they are so grateful for these wonderful treats.

Sadly, Fukushima was one of the hardest hit areas in Japan. My friend, Morito lost his warehouse and is now rebuilding. When I found this out a few days after the crisis, I worked together with the ROTHCO team to see how we could help.

And that is when the employees of ROTHCO decided to work together to raise money for the Save the Children “Japan Children in Emergency” Fund. Save the Children is the leading independent organization creating lasting change in the lives of children around the world. Through employee contributions and a generous donation by ROTHCO ownership, we are proud to say that collectively ROTHCO has raised around $4000 to donate to this important cause. In addition, we took our cause viral by encouraging our over 10,000 Facebook fans and Twitter followers to donate as well. With a disaster of the this magnitude every bit helps!

As great as a donation of money can be, we sometimes forget about the small essentials in life like clean socks and underwear. One of my clients and good friends, Yukari of Via Transports lives in Tokyo and has family in Fukushima. She told us “one of the most things they are in need is clothes especially socks and underwear because power and water are still cut and they cannot even wash their clothes.” And that is why in addition to the Save the Children Fund, ROTHCO has decided to donate over a $1000 worth of ROTHCO socks and underwear to the people of Japan.

“The Real Strength of Paracord”

There was a fundraiser in my Community to raise money to purchase a wheelchair accessible van for a local family with multiple Special Needs children. Well… my 9 year old daughter has heard me talking about the craze of the Paracord bracelets and asked me if I could buy some cord and buckles from ROTHCO so that she could make the Paracord bracelets and raise money to donate. She watched the "how to" videos on YouTube and learned how to make them. She started to sell them and the orders came “rolling in”, she even started to get requests for dog collars and key chains. It was amazing to see how a community could come together for a special cause. The Owner (Glenn Bitran) of the local Gold Coast Physical Therapy, jumped on board and purchased a bunch for his staff and family. To top it all off, ROTHCO so generously offered to match her Donation. My daughter will be donating around $700 to this wonderful cause. People are now wearing the bracelets around town and at school, and everyone is asking “Where can I buy paracord”….

ROTHCO is continuing to bring in new colors and different sizes of buckles. Next month we will also have a selection of premade bracelets. The bracelets and projects have ballooned into the Fashion and Fundraising world and will be huge for camps this summer.

The idea started with Soldiers making the bracelets on their "Free time" as a survival tool with the concept that when you unravel the bracelet, you will have 6-10 feet of Paracord which has the ability to hold 550 lbs in case you are in a compromising situation and now has become a fashion pheenomenon. These items are "Must Haves" that everyone should be carrying.

Prices Are Rising, But They're Still Cheaper Than 1990

But the subject of this blog is about rising prices, isn't it? Yes, along with the Rothco Supplement we will be sending along an updated wholesale price list for our 2011 Rothco Catalog. After staying flat or declining over the last two decades, our costs have increased significantly over the past year due to the following factors:

An increase in cotton prices of more than 100% and substantial increases in the costs of polyester, wool and other fabrics as well.
A 10 to 20% increase in overseas labor costs while the U.S. dollar fell 4%
A 33% increase in oil in the past 6 months raising shipping and plastics costs

Rothco’s deep inventory position has allowed us to hold prices for as long as possible, but we have had to make a number of increases in our news price list. Even so, the prices for most basics are at or below 1990 prices:

MA-1 Flight Jackets, M-65 Field Jackets, Battle Dress Uniform Fatigues and Jungle Boots are all at or below our wholesale pricing in 1990 (the letter accompanying the 2011 Supplement will have further details.

There was a great editorial in January's MR Marketplace that I wrote about in a previous blog entitled, "Don't Panic" explaining the value that apparel offers in today's market and the example "in the early ’70s, we sold a corduroy sportcoat for $27.50; last year that same jacket was $25 in a better fabric with better fit." Just yesterday, in the Rothco Dealer Forum, Dan Gaddy of Wartimethings.com was saying "In today's imported items, we are seeing an increase in the quality as well at the lower cost. Some of the merchandise made in other countries are even made completely to military specifications." a

The reality is that the rugged military apparel Rothco is making today is the equal or better of the products we made 20 years ago but the value they represent is much greater. Rothco dealers can be secure knowing they are offering this same excellent value to their customers. Rothco will continue to scour the U.S. and the world for the best products and the most reliable and cost effective sources. At the same time, we will continue to bring in large inventories and maintain a minimum 97% in stock rate to ensure that we will have what you need when you need it. Given the challenges that many suppliers and manufacturers are having delivering goods at ANY price, this will offer you the best opportunity to serve your customers and keep your business thriving.

Iphone, Verizon, ROTHCO? What's the connection?

As we get closer to the big release of Verizon's new iPhone from Apple the news is, that all pre-orders are sold. This was predictable but, it was used to gauge the scope of this release & the demand on the day of the release. Already, long lines are anticipated. Regardless of the weather, all old & new fans will be camped out waiting for their new gadget. At this point, ROTHCO enters the conversation. Weather! Weather will be a factor for many stores expecting long lines and there is an anticipated storm in the south/southeast. Click here for weather chart.

With the iPhone 4 explosion hitting Verizon Wireless tomorrow, it also hit Rothco in a big way. On Friday we received two orders related to the hysteria:

An order for 1440 pair of Rothco’s Black Wool Fingerless Gloves to be distributed to the Apple stores in time for the launch. As you know, these gloves are the official military touch screen glove. We also received another order for 40,000 of Rothco’s Emergency Ponchos that were shipped to Verizon stores in the Southeast, presumably for customers waiting in line for their new Verizon iPhones.

Don't Panic!!!

Rothco Dealers: I just read this very interesting article in MR Magazine on price increases and delivery issues that are confronting the apparel industry everywhere. It makes the same great points that I have made previously about the value of clothing. BDU's for instance, were over $30.00 retail in the late 80s and today they cost only $24.99. Prices will continue to increase and factories will be delivering more slowly but Rothco's huge commitment to inventory will lessen the impact and will greatly increase the chances that we will have goods in stock compared to other sources for clothing, both military and commercial.

So fear not, dealers, Rothco will have plenty of inventory and we will do our best to phase price increases gradually. In the meantime, just remember the good old days when prices were higher! vendors.

Also called parachute cord serve as the suspension lines of parachutes. They are usually made of nylon - the same material used in ordinary ropes - but are specially constructed to make them tougher, thicker, and less prone to tearing and rotting.

Paracord can and is being used to make bracelets, anklets, key chains as well as a variety of protection tools. The meaning of the paracord bracelet is up to you. It can show your support for our troops, a favorite sports team, a personal cause or even your favorite colors..... 2 weeks ago one of our salespersons and her children participated in a NEDA Walk, once they arrived her 9 year old daughter saw that the colors representing the event were light blue, she immediately thought of making Paracord bracelets to help support the cause. All ages are picking up on the concept.

As you search in Google, you'll find dozens of projects that are being created using paracord. You'll also be able to go to Youtube and see many tutorials to help create different products.

Be inventive and creative with any paracord project. Try to match your project with an event or cause. Lastly, don't forget if you ever need some rope, you'll have it right on your wrist.

A Salute to Our Troops by the NFL

At Rothco, two of the things we love most of all are the U.S. military and NFL football. Obviously, as a company that has provided gear to soldiers for decades, we have a steadfast and heartfelt belief in those who defend our country's freedom and the sacrifice they and their families make. At the same time, we looooooove NFL football. In fact, just for fun, we have a pool around the company as to who can pick the most games right each week. I'm also a New York Giants season ticket holder and most everyone here has a favorite team be it the Giants, the New York Jets or one of many out-of-town teams.

With that in mind, it's quite heartening to see the support the NFL has shown for our troops. Back at the beginning of the season, at the first Monday Night Football game, the New York Jets paid tribute to our armed services by having 200 servicemen and women unfurl a huge American flag over the field.

This month, in honor of Veteran's Day, all 32 NFL teams will be honoring our armed forces in one way or another. The first ever NFL-Tillman Military Scholar will be honored at the Arizona Cardinals game on Sunday, a partnership between the NFL and the Pat Tillman Foundation.

Lastly, here's a tribute by the Bleacher Report to NFL players who have served their country overseas. It includes all-time greats like Charlie Joiner, Ray Nitschke, Roger Staubach and Otto Graham.

Rothco helps "The Biggest Loser" get Combat Tested by the U.S. Marines

The Biggest Loser "Recruits" Arrive at Camp Pendelton

This past Tuesday on NBC one of TV's most popular shows, The Biggest Loser traveled to the U.S. Marine Corps base at Camp Pendleton where they received rigorous training my Marine Corps instructors. While there, they did some extreme marching, participated in Marine style physical training, woke up each day at 5 am and finished off with a Marine Corps obstacle course.

Excitement as the Biggest Loser Helicopter Approaches Pendleton

All in all, the 11 contestants held up quite well given the demanding conditions. Part of the reason for that may have been the rugged Rothco Battle Dress Uniforms the contestants wore that were supplied by Rothco partner Vermont's Barre Army Navy. The Biggest Loser participants wore both our City Camouflage and Sky Blue Camouflage military fatigues as well as Rothco Fatigue Caps, Web Belts, Cushion Sole Socks and Thermals. Despite all the rigors the contestants were put through, their Rothco uniforms held up throughout the week of training. Even Biggest Loser trainers Bob Harper and Jillian Michaels got into the act wearing military physical training gear and ranting at their teams like drill sergeants.

Rothco's October Partner Profile - Bill McKinney, Bradley's Military Enterprises

Bradley's Military Enterprises was established by Bill McKinney in September of 1992. Mr. McKinney had extensive military experience and had always dreamed of owning a business of his own, so this military retail store seemed like a perfect combination. By starting up this business, he was able to combine his dreams, values, and military experience.|

It was not all a dream come true, however. According to Bill, the toughest obstacle was working with the little resources he had. It was hard for Mr. McKinney to find the talented people with strong computer science skills that he needed to better endorse his business. “Because Northern New York is very rural,” he said, “We don’t have a large pool of talented people who are familiar with web pages, pay per click campaigns, search engine optimization, or other forms of e-commerce marketing. These micro barriers also create problems on a macro scale.”

Despite facing such overwhelming obstacles, Bradley’s has made respectable progress with their new web page, E-Bay Store, and other mail order operations. They are also now connected to Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, MySpace, and LinkedIn. In 2011, they will create new business operations on Amazon. They believe their persistence has led to their success on a rather windy road.

Bradley’s does also take pride in their strong management staff, and always look to surround themselves with talented employees. Though they have problems attracting talent in the IT field, they do well in the rest of their departments. Bradley’s leadership has excelled at finding new opportunities, diversifying, and creating new streams of income. At the same time, they have done a good job at staffing their departments with the right people. Currently their workforce possesses 2 master’s degrees, 7 bachelor’s degrees, and 4 employees with 20 years of military experience or more. Despite all of the challenges, Bradley’s excels at recruiting, training, and retaining talented people, something that we at Rothco are very impressed with.

Recently, great opportunities have been created for Bradley’s Military Enterprises due to the expansion of the base at Ft. Drum, New York. Bradley’s has strong name recognition that has been established by consistently taking care of soldiers for a long time. While their competition offers 3-day service, most of Bradley’s services are “on-the-spot” or same day. Likewise, their competition hires employees with little or no military experience. As a result, Bradley’s has formed a reputation for being knowledgeable and for providing superior service. Because Bradley’s is well established, possess strong name recognition, and faces little competition, this environment has allowed Bradley’s to thrive.

But entertainment is certainly not where they draw the line – they also offer transparency, security, and peace of mind, making them a “people oriented business” that offers service and more perceived value to their customers. Interestingly enough, Abraham Perkowski started off his business, Out in Style, as a hobby. In 1994, back in the days before Ebay and Amazon, he started a website (yes, there were a few websites back then) with only a few dozen items, just to see what might come of it. Fortunately, this experiment turned into a success.

There were obstacles along the way. Many new businesses began with the same ideas as Abe’s, and, as the competition grew. More “basement websites” opened and who competed on price alone. Out in Style prides itself on their customer service. Close personal attention is given to each and every order. All orders ship within one business day and are reviewed by a minimum of two supervisors, and every customer is assigned a personal salesperson regardless of dollar amount. Over the years, Out in Style has learned what their customers are looking for and they do their best to provide exactly that.

“We are still old school,” says Abe, “but we have hired a new social marketing team that will focus on Twitter and Facebook. We will also be launching new Amazon and eBay stores to increase our sales.” Though they are taking steps to keep up with today’s market, Abe and Out in Style still maintain the personal experiences and relationships that customers have valued for years.

I can personally say that as one of Abe’s largest suppliers and partners, his patronage and the close professional relationship that we have developed with each other is quite rare. The value I have for my relationship with Abe goes well beyond the business aspect. I have been to some of Abe’s family events and have learned so much about him, his family, his faith and his patriotism. These things, which are so important to him, shine through in the way he conducts himself in all of his relationships and the integrity he exhibits in all of his actions.

Out In Style was featured in the Wall Street Journal in January 2001 and voted Best Online Clothing Store by Time Out New York magazine . Furthermore, Out in Style regularly donates their extra inventory to charities and has donated tremendous amounts of gear to soldiers in times of need. Abe personally volunteers many hours daily for the Hatzalah Ambulance Company, something he’s done now for over 20 years. Abe’s passion for service was evidenced by work his work at Ground Zero on 9/11 where he spent the entire first night. He also works very closely with the NYPD terrorist task force and received an appreciation award from then-Commissioner Ray Kelly for helping solve a terrorist incident that took place in New York City on May 4, 2005. Out in Style is not just a company that is important to the industry, but to the community around it as well.

Abe is also part of an international group of volunteers called (H.E.A.R.T.) that travels to Israel during war times. He participates in helping ambulances while the regular paramedics fight in the army over there. When doing this he can often be found helping the sick and elderly or heading down to the battlefield and “war zones” to distribute free cigarettes, thousands of pairs of free thermal underwear and other donated material to the soldiers risking their lives. On more than one occasion Abe has been within feet of a landing SCUD missile and other attacks Many times he was awakened by Air Raid Sirens and given less than 30 seconds to get out of bed (and grab his ever-present Blackberry) and rush to shelter for safety. Despite this, he would not hesitate to go again if called upon.

“Out In Style credits Rothco entirely with its success- a true partner since day one,” says Abe. “Although we have extremely close relationships with ALL of our vendors, not one comes close to the warmth and personal dedication that Rothco has shown over the past years. Our relationship has always been one of family. I always have and will continue to invite my “brothers and sisters” at Rothco to my personal family Bar Mitzvahs and Weddings. The bond and friendship we share is beyond words.”
