The Multi-Tool: The Ultimate Survival Tool

It slices, it dices, it can open a beer and screw things together…It’s a Multi-Tool. This versatile hand tool serves a myriad of functions and can be easily transported in your pocket for everyday carry and is great to have when camping or building your Bug Out Bag. Below I’ve broken down some of the key features and applications for this must-have accessory.

Pliers and Wire Cutters: Every good multi-tool has a strong set of pliers. Rothco’s Multi-Tool includes a set of needle-nose pliers, regular pliers, and wire cutters. When you’re camping, you can use these pliers to move objects that are too hot, and bend wire and other materials to make a makeshift fishing hook. The wire cutters can be used to cut small branches, phone charging cables, and wires to make additional survival items, such as rope to tie objects down or together.

Serrated Saw Blade: This blade type is perfect for cutting wood and vines. When you are deep in the wilderness, you may need smaller pieces of wood to start a fire, build a shelter or a trap for food.

Screwdrivers: If your compass, binoculars, or other outdoor gear has a screw loose, Rothco’s Survival Multi-Tool features three screwdrivers- a large and small flathead screwdriver, and a Phillips head screwdriver.

Nail File: You can strike a match against the nail file to start a fire, or sharpen a blade for self-defense or sharpen an axe for cutting wood, or maybe even a manicure.

Can and Bottle Opener: Rothco’s EDC Multi-Tool includes a can / bottle opener combo tool so you can pack away canned food in your Bug Out Bag or other survival kits for emergency rations.

Awl: An awl may seem like a simple tool, but it provides a function that a knife can’t do properly – make perfect punctured holes. Whether in wood, a belt, or other objects, the awl will make a perfectly symmetrical hole for threading rope, string, a small stick, and other items through. In addition, and awl is great for breaking apart ice.

Straight Edge Blade: The straight edge blade can be used to cut open packages, cloth, paracord, or used as a weapon for self-defense while in the great outdoors.

This survival tool is the perfect versatile item to get you through any challenge that comes your way. View our entire collection of Multi-tools here.
