5 Famous Purple Heart Day Recipients






Today August 7th, is Purple Heart Day.  The Purple Heart is a United States military decoration awarded to military personnel who have been wounded or killed in combat.   This prestigious honor has been awarded to many soldiers over the past 85 years.  However, did you know that there are plenty of well-known recipients from movies, television, and politics?  Here are 5 famous people you never knew had earned Purple Hearts.


  1. Oliver Stone - Academy Award winning director famous for his movies Platoon (1986), Born on the Fourth of July (1989), JFK (1991), and many others.                                                          
  2. James Arness - Actor most famous for playing Marshal Matt Dillon on the TV show Gunsmoke  for over 600 episodes.                                                                                                   
  3. John F. Kennedy - The 35th President of the United States and the only Commander in Chief to be awarded the purple heart.                                                                                                            
  4. Rod Sterling - Most famous for narrating the incredibly famous TV series The Twilight Zone.  Screen writer Rod Sterling earned his Purple Heart during World War II.                                     
  5. John McCain - Current United States Senator from Arizona and a former presidential candidate earned his medal during his service in the Vietnam War.        





On this day, Rothco would like to thank all the brave soldiers who have put their lives on the line to protect their country.  Their sacrifices to keep the United States safe will forever be remembered.
