One Of Rothco's Own Joins The Air Force

Angelith accepting her award from John Ottaviano
Last Friday, Rothco's employees gathered for our monthly employee recognition ceremony. This month's honoree, Angelith, was extra special, as she will be leaving Rothco this month to join the United States Air Force. While she will be missed, Rothco is honored to have a member of our team join the Armed Forces.

We sat down with Angelith, who has worked for Rothco for over six months, to learn more about her choice to join the military. It turns out she has had inspirations to join the military since she was a little girl.

"The main person to influence me to join the military was my father. My father was in the military in Colombia and since I was little I wanted to be like him, so my inspiration for joining something greater than me, it started with my father. Then, in High School, I had the pleasure to be part of the Air Force Junior ROTC program, which gave me great inspiration and insight into what it would mean to become a soldier. I can still remember how moved I would become when someone would walk up to me and thank me for my service. It was a great experience and the spark that lead me to lock my decision of joining." Angelith U.

In joining the Air Force Angelith hopes to grow as a person and help her community by becoming a leader. "Becoming part of the Air Force is a great privilege and honor. But hopefully one day I will become a leader to younger and ambitious individuals like myself. In the future, maybe one day I would like to become a pilot or an attorney in the military."

We couldn't send her off
 without some #RothcoGear
When asked what she is most excited about in regards to joining, she said she is most excited about  the journey she will be taken. "I’m excited at the journey I just decided to start. Believe me, this is just the start. I’m excited at the responsibilities that come with becoming part of the greatest Air Force in the world. I’m excited to know that when someone needs help, I can be that help. I can help protect not only those who are important to me but a whole nation."

Angelith's Father, her inspiration for joining the military, is her number one supporter. "Make me proud, Angelith.” he often tells her. While her Mom, like most moms, is scared, she supports her decision 100%. Angelith also has the full support of her friends who have always seen her as someone who would be part of the military.

Everyone here at Rothco is extremely proud of Angelith and the honor she will bring to our country. She exemplifies true courage and determination. We wish her the best of luck on her
new journey.

This Day in History: June 14th

Don't Have a Flag for Flag Day? Rothco's Got You Covered
June 14th holds historical significance in the United States for two reasons; today marks Flag Day, a commemoration of the adoption of the U.S. Flag, as well as the birthday of the U.S. Army. President Woodrow Wilson instituted Flag Day in 1916 to celebrate the United States flag the Continental Congress adopted in 1777. June 14th must have been a good day to make important decisions, as two years earlier the Continental Congress founded the American Continental Army. So here are a few things you might not have known about United States Army’s birthday and Flag Day:
  • Pennsylvania was the first state to celebrate Flag Day.
  • Flag Day actually marks the beginning of a 21 day period called “Honor America Days” ending on the 4th of July.
  • While June 14th was proclaimed Flag Day, it is not a national holiday but is treated as a holiday in certain areas of the United States.
  • The United States Army wasn’t called the “United States Army” until 1796; it was previously called the Continental Army, the Regular Army, and the Legion of the United States.
  • Originally, the Continental Congress authorized just 10 companies of riflemen.
  • The Congress had wished for secrecy when forming the American Continental Army and so there are very few journal entries from the Continental Congress that day.

Remembering D-Day

"We will accept nothing less than full victory."
General Dwight D. Eisenhower

Today June 6th, 2016 marks the 72nd Anniversary of D-Day. Known as “the beginning of the end of war in Europe,” D-Day occurred when American, British and Canadian forces landed on five beaches stretching along 50 miles of France’s Normandy region. Troops landed under heavy fire on mined and obstacle covered beaches. The result of this day was the allied liberation of Western Europe from Nazi Germany’s control. As a major event in history, it is important to keep the memory of this day alive.

Take Rothco's 5-in-1 Multi-Purpose Tool on Your Next Camping Trip

With the warm weather officially back, we can finally go back to spending more time in the great outdoors. For us in the northeast, this also means it's time for another camping season.  So, with camping on my mind, I wanted to take one of our coolest and most popular survival tools and put it to the test... The Rothco 5-in-1 Multi-Purpose Tool.

As you can infer from its name, this survival gadget has 5 interchangeable tools packed into one small carrying case. Just by swapping the heads, you can have an axe, saw, shovel, pick and compass at your disposal in seconds. When I first opened the kit, I was impressed by the heavy, durable construction of these steel tools. So, I put them into action, and they did not disappoint. The saw was capable of cutting through a log big enough for a large fire. The ax chopped clean into large log without much effort. The shovel was more than capable of penetrating a dried dirt surface. And the pickax is definitely a sturdy tool that will get the job done every time. The best part is you get all of these tools in an efficient nylon pouch that could be easily stored in your pack for when you need it.  Needless to say, I will be taking it on my next camping trip.
