Rothco Raised Over $369,000 for Charity in 2016

When Rothco sets a goal, not only to we meet it, we exceed it! Together as a team, Rothco raised $369,729 for local grassroots charities this holiday season. Not only did Rothco beat our dollar goal for 2016, we also had 100% employee contribution, every one of Rothco's 133 employees donated this year! As I said, when we set a goal, we crush it!

For over a decade Rothco's team members have come together during the holiday season to raise money for local charities. In fact, over the past 3 years, Rothco has raised over 3 quarters of a million dollars for charity, $820,069 to be exact! 100% of that money goes directly to Long Island, NY based grassroots charities. This year Rothco donated to 8 local charities, including:

  • Angela's House - provides residential care and home health care to critically ill children in Suffolk Count
  • Hope House Ministries - provides housing and support for at-risk male adolescents.
  • Gerald Ryan Outreach Center -  provides counseling, food pantry and assistance to local families in financial crisis.
  • Pronto - provides food, support, clothing, etc. to the Hispanic community.
  • A Mother’s Kiss - provides support and counseling for families of critically ill children.
  • Witness Housing - provides financial support for families who need help paying their bills, so that they can stay in their homes
  • Long Island Against Domestic Violence-  provides a range of services that help over 14,000 Long Island adults and children each year to escape from abusive relationships and build new lives
  • Suffolk County United Veterans - provides counseling, support services for U. S. Veterans of the Armed Forces.

Here at Rothco, we realize how fortunate we are and are always looking for ways to give back to the community we call home. That is why we take our holiday charity program so seriously. Each year we set out to beat last year's total contributions because we know how important it is for everyone to have a happy holiday and how far a dollar can go when you have your company matching the donations by 3X!

2016 was an amazing year and we can't wait to see what we can do as a team next year. Go #TeamRothco

Cold Weather Boots for Rain or Snow

Being a company that manufactures military and tactical gear, you probably already know that we carry jungle boots, tactical boots, and combat boots. What you may not know, it that we also have a growing line of cold weather and rain boots.

Our 8" Cold Weather Hiking Boot has been around for over a decade, and with good reason. The Thermoblock insulated boot makes it not only the perfect boot for trekking through snow but also makes it a great boot for wet and rainy weather.

More recently, we took the Cold Weather Hiking Boot and amped it up with the Rothco 8" Extreme Cold Weather Hiking Boot. It's the same comfortable design but the 600 gram Thermoblock insulation (400 grams more than the original) makes it suitable for the coldest more frigid environments.

For the more casual outdoorsman (or woman) we also recently introduced the All Weather Duck Boot; comfortable and durable. Whether winter throws you a blizzard or a rainstorm, you'll be prepared to battle the elements with Rothco's line of Cold Weather Boots.

The 2016 Camo Trend is Back and Better than Ever

While camouflage was typically worn for mimicking trees as a disguise or blending in, now camo is becoming a staple piece in people’s wardrobes. Wearing camo is all about making a statement and standing out in a crowd. Colored camo is gaining popularity and gaining it quick! Various colors and styles of camo have been exploding into the Streetwear market and people are jumping on this opportunity to create a unique and attention grabbing style.

Brightly colored camo is becoming especially influential in the Streetwear Market. This trend is growing and expected to continue through fall 2017! Rothco offers over 30 different camo patterns, including Sky Blue, Yellow Stinger, Red Camo and Purple. The Streetwear market is not only wearing colored camo because of the tremendous trend right now, but it’s also about the comfort. Rothco’s BDU Pants and Fatigue Shirts are made with comfortable, durable poly/cotton twill. Rothco also offers tons of colored camo long and short sleeve t-shirts made from a poly/cotton blend. Here at Rothco we know a thing or two about camo, including colored patterns, military patterns, digital patterns and camo patterns that are exclusive to Rothco.

Rothco’s colored camo patterns have been cut up and sewn back together by designers and used by screen printers to make it more unique. Rothco’s colored camo was also seen in A$AP Mob’s music video “Yamborghini High”.

Camo has made its way from being strictly used for military and hunting applications to now becoming a popular mainstream, must-have item.

Meet Captain Camo - Rothco's "Bear on the Chair"

The Holiday Season has now begun and Rothco's been getting into the spirit early. Aside from our annual charity program (which you can read about here) we're also getting into the spirit of the holidays with the Bear on the Chair!

Some people may have heard of the Elf on the Shelf, who watches for Santa and reports back with who has been naughty and who has been nice; but here at Rothco, we've recruited Captain Camo, our "Bear on the Chair" to spread some holiday cheer around the office. What we didn't count on is that he's quite the prankster as you can see in the video below.

The stuffed Rothco Bear is actually a new addition you can find on our website, although the one we sell has a fatigue cap on, not a Santa hat. Captain Camo will be getting into all sorts of mischief for the rest of the year so follow along with all the fun by adding us on Snapchat and liking us on Facebook. Be sure to snap back or comment with ideas for what you want to see our Bear on the Chair do next!

In addition to our steadfast commitment to service and selection for our dealers; Rothco is also dedicated to giving back to the community which has allowed us to flourish over the past 60+ years. Which is why #GivingTuesday - a recent social movement which encourages people to give back, is so fitting to highlight Rothco's Holiday Charity Programs.

Throughout the year Rothco makes a commitment to give back to our community with several charitable programs, including:
  • Thanksgiving Turkey Donations: this year Rothco donated 60 turkeys to local food pantries and community outreach centers.
  • Holiday Charity Program: For over two decades Rothco employees have come together every holiday season to donate money to local grassroots charities. For every dollar raised by our employees, Rothco triples that donation!!! In 2015, Rothco donated over $247,000, and we hope to pledge even more this year!
  • Partnering With Local Veterans Organizations:  This past Veterans Day, Rothco donated over 730 boots to homeless veterans in partnership with the charity General Needs. In addition to the General Needs program, Rothco works closely with the Suffolk County United Veterans Project throughout the year.
#GivingTuesday is a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media, and collaboration is about helping your community. Collaboration & Community are two key words that sum up Rothco's Charity Programs. As a team, Rothco employees come together to raise money and donate their time to help those less fortunate in our community. We realize how fortunate we are and how important it is to give back to the community we live in.

Helping Local Veterans for Veterans Day

Today, Veterans Day, we honor the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces for their courage and sacrifice for our country. The sacrifices and service of our veterans are not lost on Rothco, and that is why we have made a steadfast commitment to give back to the local men and women of our military. In partnership with a local organization General Needs, which provides necessities like clothing, toiletries and bedding to homeless veterans; Rothco was able to donate over 730 boots to homeless veterans across Long Island. The boots will be hand delivered to them on Veterans Day by members of General Needs and Rothco.

Being able to help our heroes is a truly humbling experience.  The thought that our boots could help a soldier who has fallen on hard times is truly amazing. While our small act, will in no way pay them back for all that they have done for our country. It is a reminder that even the smallest act of kindness, can go a long way. That is why Rothco is always looking for ways to help our Veterans. In addition to the project with General Needs, Rothco also works in close collaboration with the Suffolk County United Veterans Organization. As a local company, Rothco realizes how important it is for us to give back to the community that has helped us grow and to honor the men and women of our military for their service today, and every day.

Rothco's Football Friday and Employee of the Month

Last year, Rothco and its employees donated nearly a quarter of a million dollars to local charities. Giving back to the community is something that Howard and Milton Somberg have engrained into the very foundation of Rothco's company culture. We're all very proud of the donations that we make as individual employees as well as the total contribution that Rothco donates every year.

Representatives from 3 of the Charities Rothco Supports
Today, we held our monthly Employee of the Month ceremony, as we do every month; but today it was a little bit different. For starters, we had representatives from three of the charities we support come and speak on behalf of the families and individuals they help. (You can find a full list of charities Rothco donates to on our website.) It was a heartwarming reminder of the good these charities are doing in supporting their communities.

Besides our guest speakers and the Employee of the Month ceremony, there was one other thing that made this Friday stand out even further. Today, at Rothco, was dubbed "Football Friday" which is a sort of "casual Friday" where employees were allowed to wear their favorite sports teams' jersey to work and for each jersey worn, Rothco would donate $10 towards the Holiday Charity Program. 138 employees wore sports jerseys (yes we included baseball and hockey) and so Rothco donated an additional $1,380 to the growing Holiday Charity Fund. It was great to see the entire company rally together as a team!

On the Road

This is my first time contributing to the Rothco blog and I’m happy to do it! My name is Justin Hum, and I started working here at Rothco almost 3 years ago as a sales intern. I studied marketing and sociology at Stony Brook University, graduating in 2014. Like I said, I started out as a sales intern making cold calls, sending out catalogs, along with other clerical work. I was eventually switched to customer service, and my role has since expanded to include sales work and marketing as well. Essentially I’m a jack of all trades, master of none. The expansion of my role obviously resulted in several new learning experiences and opportunities.

One such experience occurred several weeks ago when I was brought on a road trip with Ted Statharos, one of Rothco’s experienced sales managers. I knew beforehand, that it would be an enlightening experience. However, I had not anticipated how exhausted I would be afterward. Don’t get me wrong, it’s always fun to talk to new people, but when you have over 4000 amazing products to highlight, it can be a little bit tiring. Overall, this was a rather beneficial and productive trip as we were able to gather valuable information for further product development. We went on a visit into Queens, NY and I had the opportunity to see a variety of stores and talk to several of our customers.

The first store we went to was a hunting and outdoor store named Atlantic Center & Sports, which gave me a brief glimpse into how one of our more old school dealers operates. Next we went to Brown’s Army Navy, in Jackson Heights which had a beautiful display of our backpacks lined up against one of their front walls. It’s always a pleasure to walk into a store and see your items advertised there. We then went to a uniform shop in Richmond Hill named Jo-Paul’s. Despite the small size of this shop, it gets a surprising amount of foot traffic. We were there for about an hour and a half to two hours, and we were barely able to get a word in with the owner. It seemed like they had something for every type of public service personnel. The final store we visited was a small skate shop in Astoria named Belief. This place was particularly interesting because they were in between seasons, so they hadn’t started to purchase winter apparel yet, which made it a good opportunity for us to show them some of our products.

Getting out on the road gave me a new understanding of our dealers. I had the unique opportunity to see the inner workings of their stores and how our product fits into their operations.  It was great to get out and see a broad range of customers and see what Rothco means to so many different markets. In addition to our dealers, I gained a wealth of sales knowledge from my fellow road warrior Ted. I can’t wait to get back out there again and meet more of our dealers!

7 Tips To Survive A Zombie Apocalypse: The Walking Dead Edition

In just 2 short days The Walking Dead returns with their Season 7 premiere and up until this point the show’s survivors have lived through disease, hunger, tragedy and betrayal. They found safety and stability in a world they once knew, but it turns out the world is even more dangerous than they thought. It’s a zombie eat human world out there and while TWD has presented us with some zombie survival tips, what if a zombie apocalypse were to happen tomorrow? Would you know how to survive?

7 Tips To Survive A Zombie Apocalypse:

1. Keep your head straight. Freak out for a minute, then calm down and focus. We all watch the show so we know what to expect.

2. Have a plan. Are you going to run to the mountains for higher elevation? Keep quiet and hide, hoping something else would capture their attention before they find you? Are you going to mimic them since they only identify each other by movements and sounds? Distract them? Out-run them? Whichever you choose to do, make sure you have a plan and stick to it.

3. Have your Bug-Out Bag packed and handy. Make sure it includes all of the essentials: Food, Water, Tools, Fire, Navigation, Clothing, Weapons, Shelter and a First Aid Kit.

4. Have the proper tools to fight off zombies.

5. Make sure you have a durable outfit to fight off zombies. First, you want to have a good pair of gloves with a hard knuckle feature to fight off the zombies and protect your hands. To protect yourself from bites, you should be wearing long sleeves and pants so you’re exposing as little skin as possible. Rothco’s Military FR NYCO Combat Shirts are made for comfort and worn for protection. Rothco’s V-max Lightweight Tactical Boot is the perfect footwear to have on. With a running shoe sole and comfort of a military boot, these lightweight boots make an excellent shoe when trying to outrun zombies.

6. Zombie Proof you house. Have barricades, like heavy furniture, blocking the doors and board up your windows to block them from breaking in. Aim for higher ground by going upstairs.

7. Last but not least, don’t forget to have a right hand man! You can’t face these zombies alone.
