Practical Survival Tips from "The Walking Dead"

AMC's "The Walking Dead" is a great show, full of drama, zombies, action, and tremendous character development and acting. While this show is based completely in fiction and often times tests the boundaries of reality, even for a zombie show, there were 3 big aspects of survival that were emphasized on last week’s episode that stood out to me as important reinforcement survival lessons.
  1. Preventing Dehydration: There is a reason that water and hydration are always at the top of the list when it comes to survival or bugging out. The group from “The Walking Dead” found that our first hand this week as the poorly provisioned group wandered through unfamiliar terrain in an apparent drought. This, accompanied with them not having sufficient food, lead to sluggishness and weakness. This becomes a problem because, apart from your body physically not running at 100%, your mind begins to dull and your senses aren't sharp. The most important survival tool you have is your mind and if it isn't functioning you probably won’t survive very long. This brings me to my next point…
  2. Keep Your Head: The group this week was handling the recent loss of two of its members; this, accompanied by the lack of nutrition and hydration, leads to a few group members doubting their resolve. Noah admits that he doesn't think he can go on, Maggie has multiple breakdowns, and Sasha gets angry and nearly leads to Rick getting bitten. Every survival situation calls for you keeping your wits about you and the group was struggling to hold it together. Speaking of together…
  3. Work together. You won’t always be with others in a survival situation, in which case the point is mute, but if you are it’s important to make a plan and work together to see it through. The group had a nice plan laid out for dealing with the zombies near the overpass; Sasha broke the plan, forced improvisation, and Rick nearly gets chomped.
I’m glad the writers were able to incorporate some practical survival scenarios this week, apart from zombie killing strategy; or perhaps I just dive a little too deep into this show pulling out what practical things I can from the very unrealistic world of the zombie apocalypse.

Good Deeds

Earlier this year, Rothco was happy to write about the success of our Christmas Charity Program. In the winter of 2014, Rothco's employees along with the corporation of Rothco (who matched all donations x3) were able to raise over $200,000 for 10 local charities.

Here at Rothco we realize how fortunate we are and are always looking for ways to give back to the community we call home. That is why we take our holiday charity program so seriously and that is why it is always so great to see how appreciative the charities we work with are to receive the donations.

This letter we received from Witness Housing is proudly displayed throughout our office.

Rothco is always looking for ways to give back to the community, currently we are working on a clothing drive and I am pretty that any day now we will begin the planning of this year's holiday charity program.

Rothco At SHOT

This year’s 2015 SHOT Show was a busy, exciting market place where vendor’s were able to showcase many new products.  The breadth and depth of these products designed to keep your customer’s interested and engaged in what you have to offer, seemed greater than ever!

I had a wonderful opportunity to talk to our dealers about brand new product, and further developments of existing ones! I've been attending the SHOT Show for over a decade now and this year I saw some of our most buzzed about items.

Among the bags, there were a number of popular items. A standout was the Large Wheeled Transport Pack, this is a M.O.L.L.E. compatible travel back pack with wheels and retractable tow-handle.

Also, the MOLLE Tactical Tool Bag is a great large “DOP” bag or smaller range bag!  The “hook-n-loop patch book was very well rec’d as this is a practical way to keep your Moral patches, or any hook-n-loop backed patch assortment neat and organized!

Among clothing, our
Light weight, Spec-ops Jacket, now available in O.D. drew a lot of attention. Its micro-fiber polyester shell has a wt. which is close to the Gen III level 5 jacket and is nearly waterproof! It retains most of the features of the regular spec-ops jacket, including a tuck-away hood, yet only weighs 1.25 pounds!

Our digital BDU assortment continues to grow as we have added Digital Pink, and Digital Red Camo

One of the most talked about items was our new Desert, V-max Tactical Boot. This is our lightest and most comfortable desert boot ever! The boot was designed to give you running shoe comfort in a military style tactical boot.

For the outdoors, we have some great new products, such as a “parachute material”, lt. weight, packable hammock, which comes in at just 1 pound! The O.D., self-inflating mattress w. straps addresses the need for something more comfortable the a regular closed cell pad!  MRE main entree’s are now available and we introduced our very popular MOLLE water bottle carrier in Multicam!

Our new  2015 Supplement will be out in March. If you missed the show, you will see all the new items there, or stay tuned for the new product emails! I've also included some images from our booth.

I hope to see you at a show very soon!
