NYZ Zombie Survival

Not so scary with the lights on
This past weekend I had the pleasure of visiting one of our dealers here on Long Island, StrikeForce Sports, in an attempt to learn more about the sport of airsoft. I expected to see the two walls of airsoft guns, the shop full of gear, much of it being Rothco, the staging area bustling with players preparing for their next match, but I did not expect to come across zombies.

Attached to StrikeForce is NYZ Apocalypse, a unique zombie survival experience in which you are equipped with full weight laser rifles, set loose into the Apollo Prison System, and tasked with eradicating the zombie population that has overrun the facility. They were kind enough to allow me to tour the facility before operating hours (so that I would be safe from zombies) and I was thrilled by what I found.

One of NYZ's makeup stations
NYZ is more than just laser tagging zombies; it’s a fully immersive experience. The zombies are made up at the facility in full makeup, full prison gear (like Rothco's Orange Jumpsuit), get into character, and stay in character; the course sounds, looks (if you can see in the dark), and even smells like the real deal.

This looks like a great event for the Halloween season and I can’t wait to grab a team, head down to NYZ, and try out the course myself; maybe I’ll even see if I can get a job as a zombie.

Rothco Wins the HIA Large Business Achievement Award

Milton Somberg, Howard Somberg, HIA Awards
Milton & Howard Somberg Being Honored
Yesterday Milton Somberg and Howard Somberg graciously accepted the HIA Large Business Award for 2014 on behalf of Rothco. It was a great honor bestowed upon Rothco by one of the largest business associations in the U.S. And while it was an honor just to be nominated and to be a part of this special event and organization; receiving such an award from our fellow Long Island business leaders was a great achievement for Rothco.

The award, which is celebrating its 20th Year, is given to companies who demonstrate achievements in industry leadership, creativity, successful business operations, corporate vision and other factors necessary to develop and grow a winning organization. Along with Milton and Howard Somberg members of Rothco's team joined in on the celebration, everyone there was extremely proud of Rothco and the award we received.

5 Survival Essentials

There are a lot of things you can have when you're preparing yourself for a survival situation but there are a few things that you must have. Rothco is breaking it down to the basics so here are our 5 Survival Essentials:

1. Fire: Not only does fire keep you warm but it also cooks your food, boils your water, serves as a light in the dark, and can protect you against wildlife. Make sure you always have a lighter or fire starter handy.
2. Water: You won't last more than a few days without water so make sure you've got the means to keep yourself hydrated.
3. Shelter: Mother Nature can be harsh sometimes so it's important to keep yourself protected from the elements.
4. Food: In an emergency situation you'll need to keep your strength and energy up so make sure you have a suitable food source or the ability and knowledge to gather/hunt your own.
5. Navigation: You should always know where you are and where you are going. (Did Confucius say that?)

Rothco Insider: Summer Internship Insights

This summer Rothco employed 18 summer interns in various departments including our sales, purchasing and web team. Our intern David Mulry was kind enough to write about his experience here at Rothco.
Three months ago I started my internship here at Rothco as a web development intern under Nick Woodhead. I have been lucky to work with a welcoming group of people who had no problems taking time out of their busy schedules to teach me new tricks or help me learn a new aspect of the site. I cannot thank them enough for their generosity. It just goes to show how strong the Rothco community is and I am glad to have been a part of it this summer.

I gained invaluable experience during my time here. I learned about hmvc website
structuring and how best to set up and write the code of a website using php. Nick was great about walking me through operations and code changes he would make to the site also. But aside from working on the code of the site I learned how a company should work together to accomplish tasks. I am lucky to have learned everything in such an exemplary environment.

My main task during the summer was to set up and write the articles for Rothco’s Knowledge Base. Its purpose is to provide directions for a number of tasks within Rothco’s websites, whether it is learning the structure of the front-end site, or how to edit what appears there through the admin. Other than the knowledge base I was given other tasks such as, adding Rothco products to the old b2b website, or testing for bugs whenever changes were made to the website, just to name a few.

I cannot thank everyone enough for helping me and teaching me so much during my time here. It was truly an unforgettable experience.
