Rothco's Insights Into the Camping, Survival & Outdoor Market

Did you know there is a great opportunity for crossover into the Camping, Survival and Outdoor market? Simply because you are probably already selling many of the core items needed to cater to this very popular market. It’s not by chance that many of Rothco’s top selling items in this category are jackets, boots and other clothing items. However since the Preppers have come on the scene and we have had T.V. shows like Doomsday Preppers and Doomsday Bunkers the demand in this market has gotten stronger.

There is a lot of interesting items to cover and you can see some of them by checking out my presentation below or the list I've included in the blog.

5 basic item categories that are utilized in the camping, survival and outdoor market.
1. Fire Starters – #900 Aurora Fire Starter
(Fire has been a key element since the beginning of time and the need to create fire has not changed. This is a very strong item and because of the variety available an assortment would be recommended.)
2. Rope or Paracord– #303 Paracord
(Paracord has gained popularity for making survival bracelets and other accessories and for a very good reason. It’s ideal to have rope in an emergency or just for basic outdoor needs.)
3. Tools / Knife - #3674 Paracord Knife w/Fire Starter
(A knife is the primary tool of the outdoors. Besides the obvious cutting role, it is also helpful in making other tools or as a weapon if necessary.)
4. Hydration – #2825 MOLLE Hydration Pack
(There are many options from canteens to hydration backpacks or larger hydration compatible backpacks. Whether you are in a survival situation or just enjoying the outdoors it’s important to stay hydrated.)
5. Backpacks – #2287 Medium Transport Pack
(It’s important to offer several different sizes and styles for various application. The “Bug Out Bag” which is a backpack filled with the survival items of choice is a great way to market and sell add on products. Below is the link to the Rothco “Bug Out Bag” flyer. This is a useful tool to help you and your customers consider items they may be missing.

These are just 5 basics but there’s more.  By adding items such as stools, portable toilets, eating utensils and cooking items you can easily broaden your offering for a camping section.
Or by adding signal mirrors, survival blanket, water purification items or emergency food you can cater more to a survival base. Whichever direction you wish to grow Rothco has you covered. You can view the entire list of top survival items here

Don't Tread On Me This 4th of July

With the 4th of July only a few days away, Americans across our great nation prepare to share our reinvigorated feelings of patriotism and pride with our families, friends, and neighbors. The day is full of backyard barbecues and parades while the night belongs to the fireworks lighting the sky. Our red, white, & blue stars and stripes are incorporated into everything from clothing to food as we celebrate the freedom and liberties so many brave Americans fought to give us.

It’s a great feeling to celebrate our current state as a nation but, as a history minor, I find myself looking back to the early days of our nation. While the stars & stripes have become an American symbol, it wasn’t always so and, apparently, others realize this as well. Recently, the Gadsden Flag, with its “don’t tread on me” mantra, has become an incredibly popular item.

Tea Party politics aside, the Gadsden Flag was an early symbol of freedom & independence for the 13 colonies. The flag itself was designed by Christopher Gadsden and was used by the commander in chief of the American Navy, in 1775. The snake, pictured on the flag, was used as a symbol throughout the American Revolution. According to the “American Guesser”, (who is widely believed to have been Benjamin Franklin) Continental Marines had painted the snake and “don’t tread on me” on their drums.
Sneak peek at Rothco's Gadsden cap & shemagh

As such a symbol of classical American independence, it’s no wonder “don’t tread on me” products have grown in popularity. Rothco has not only the Gadsden flag but also a “don’t tread on me” t-shirt and bandana. Later this year, we’ll also be introducing a “don’t tread on me” shemagh and cap with a few other accessories to come.

So while I will most definitely be wearing my red, white, and blue this 4th of July, I think I’ll also add a touch of black & yellow as a throwback to Benjamin Franklin and Christopher Gadsden. Far too often we forget our founding fathers but without these men we wouldn't have any stars and stripes or 4th of July to celebrate. So remember our forefathers who gave us our freedom, the men & women who fight to protect that freedom, and the history of our great nation; for those who don't learn from their history are destined to repeat it.
